"Real Housewives of Potomac" star filed for bankruptcy

New York residents who are fans of the Real Housewives series on Bravo may be interested to learn that a new cast member from the upcoming 'Real Housewives of Potomac" filed for bankruptcy before appearing on the show. Robyn Dixon, who was married to former NBA player Juan Dixon, filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy on Sept. 26, 2013.

When 36-year-old Dixon filed for bankruptcy in Maryland, she listed debts totaling $217,000 and a monthly income of less than $2,000. According to bankruptcy paperwork, Dixon owed the large majority of her unpaid debt to a mortgage company. Dixon also owed $28,372 to Audi Financial Services for her car and $16,577 to American Express.

Dixon is called an event manager and publicist on her Bravo bio, but it's unclear how much she earns from those occupations. However, in 2013, Dixon made $13,873 working as a consultant. After filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy, Dixon was discharged in February 2014. She was ordered to pay $16,183 to the IRS for unpaid taxes, surrender her vehicle and enroll in credit counseling. In October 2014, Dixon's bankruptcy case was closed.

Most consumer debts can be discharged in bankruptcy, and many people who file for bankruptcy emerge from the process owing nothing to creditors. A lawyer may be able to look into a person's financial records to determine if filing for bankruptcy is a good decision. An attorney might also be able to help a person maximize the use of exemptions during bankruptcy.
